Course Levels

Ma'ayan welcomes students of all backgrounds to its classes. Each course is assigned a level number, indicating the knowledge base and the degree of comfort with Hebrew texts that is assumed of its enrollees. All courses, regardless of level, strive for a sophisticated approach to the texts at hand. The level number indicates the audience for which the teacher has prepared the material.

Ma'ayan classes are conducted in English and while texts are, for the most part, presented in Hebrew, many are available in translation. For more information about course levels, contact us directly. We are happy to answer questions.

Level 1

Little or no experience with primary text study or Hebrew.

Level 2

Some text study background and Hebrew language skills.

Level 3

Previous experience with primary texts and Hebrew language.

Level All

Course designed to challenge students at many levels, yet is accessible to all.

The Spiritual Dimension of Mitzvot: A Two-Session Mini-Course
Rabbi David Shapiro
 Level: All

OPEN TO MEN AND WOMEN

If halachah (formal Jewish law) determines how we are to act Jewishly, what role is left for individual spiritual expression?  In two independent sessions, Rabbi David Shapiro will explore sources that legitimize the search for distinctive spiritual expression within the halachic tradition, and sources that discuss how to perform a prescribed halachic act (a mitzvah) while enhancing its spiritual dimensions.  Participants are welcome to join one or both classes in this short series.

 Wednesdays, September 14 and 21, 8:00-9:15 PM
Young Israel of Brookline
Tuition: $18/session; $30 for both.

Fifth Annual Rosalie Katchen Memorial Lecture: Perspectives on Malkhiyot, Zikhronot and Shofarot
Bernard Septimus

The lecture will discuss the three blessings that accompany the sounding of the shofar, and that stand at the core of the Rosh Ha-Shanah liturgy. It will attempt to show how these blessings can be better appreciated through an analysis of their literary structure and an understanding of their place in the history of classical liturgy.

Sunday, September 25, 7:30pm
Cong. Shaarei Tefillah
Program is free. Donations in memory of Rosalie Katchen are welcome.
